Cocoyotla Black on Natural

Submitted by mccaffer on Wed, 03/11/2009 - 02:58.

Cocoyotla Black on Natural in its basic type is the equivalent of Noguera’s negro sobre color natural del barro.  It is identified by a lightly burnished, unslipped tannish orange body with black painted decoration, usually in the form of horizontal or wavy lines.  More elaborate decorations in zoomorphic or floral motifs may occur on the interior base.  Subtypes include Sencillo, Incised, Banded, Banded Elegante, and Chalco Black on Orange.  Cocoyotla pottery is diagnostic of the Early and Middle Tlachihualtepetl periods (700-1050 CE).
